AN 88-YEAR-OLD man is campaigning for improved safety at a town centre pedestrian crossing after he

Ralph Jarrett wants the Canute Place crossing lit at night.

"I do not want to be one of the statistics before action is taken," he said.

Mr Jarrett, who lives Fir Tree Avenue, was crossing King Edward Road when he heard a 'squeal of brakes'.

"The car stopped just a foot or so away from me," he said.

"The driver clearly hadn't seen me even though I was wearing a light-coloured anorak and carrying white plastic bags full of shopping."

The pensioner, who , has already written to MP Martin Bell and Cheshire County Council.

"I want this to be looked at as a matter of urgency," he said. "The beacon at the crossing hasn't been operating for over a month."

No one was available for comment at Cheshire County Council.
